Hundreds of patients benefit from free cataract surgery in Colombo

COLOMBO– A major two-day humanitarian medical mission concluded today, having successfully restored sight to hundreds of Sri Lankan patients through free cataract and intraocular lens implantation surgeries.

The initiative, held on August 19 and 20 at Kings Hospital in Colombo, was a joint effort by the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation (ASLCSCC) and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The program was implemented through the collaborative medical expertise of the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from China and Colombo’s Kings Hospital.

A team of skilled ophthalmologists, led by Dr. Zhang Wei, Head of the Chinese medical team and Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, worked alongside doctors and nursing staff from Kings Hospital to perform 100 sight-restoring surgeries.

A post-operative care ceremony was held at Kings Hospital today, August 21, to mark the successful completion of the program. The event focused on the ongoing care for the patients, including follow-up procedures to ensure full recovery.

His Excellency Qi Zhenhong, the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. The ceremony was also attended by:
