COLOMBO — Marking a significant milestone in the proud 141-year history of Hameed Al Husseinie College, Colombo, a foundation stone for its new nine-storey Education, Sports and Innovation Complex was ceremonially laid on Sunday, June 28, on a newly acquired 102-perch plot adjoining the college premises.
The ceremony was held under the patronage of philanthropist Al Haj Ilyas Abdul Kareem.
The Chief Guest, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Dr. Rizvie Salih, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the vital role of quality education and modern educational infrastructure in shaping responsible citizens and strengthening national development. He also commended the collective efforts of Light for Life and the Hameedian community in undertaking this landmark initiative.
Director of the Light for Life organization and an old boy of the college, K.R. Akram, delivered the welcome address.
The entire programme was conceived, planned, coordinated, and successfully executed under the visionary leadership and overall direction of Faizal Buhary, Old Boy and Director of Light for Life.
The modern building project has been designed to provide an integrated environment for educational, sporting, and extracurricular activities. The project was conceptualized and presented by Light for Life, an organization that has continuously contributed to the social development and advancement of the people of Sri Lanka.
The new complex will include a modern administrative block for the Principal, Vice Principals, and administrative staff. It will also feature dedicated Student and Parent Counselling Centres to support students’ academic progress, mental well-being, and parental guidance.
Philanthropist Al Haj Ilyas Abdul Kareem, Principal of the College Mrs. N. Shaniya Dain, Dr. Rizvie Salih, donors, and other distinguished guests participated in the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. Old Boys’ Association Secretary Imtiaz Illyas delivered the vote of appreciation, expressing gratitude to the guests, organizers, and participants for their contributions to the event.
During the ceremony, the organizers presented a memento to the Chief Guest, Dr. Rizvie Salih, in appreciation of his participation.
Among those present were Member of Parliament Mujeebur Rahuman, former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Directors of Light for Life, Hameed Al Husseinie College Principal Mrs. N. Shaniya Dain, Deputy Principals, Zahira College Principal Trizviiy Marikar, members of the School Development Committee, the President and members of the Zahira College Old Boys’ Association, parents, teachers, students, and well-wishers.
