Fleeing man arrested in Mumbai, deported to Colombo

COLOMBO -An individual who managed to flee from the country despite a travel ban imposed by a court order was detained on a flight and deported after landing in Mumbai today.

The 45-year-old suspect from Jaffna had been ordered not to leave the country by Point Pedro and Mallakam Magistrates.

However, on Tuesday night (29) he had managed to sneak through the departure terminal and board the SriLankan Airlines flight en route to Mumbai.

An Australian lady waiting for clearance at the Immigration and Emigration counter who noticed a passenger passing through the counter stealthily had informed the officers.

The officers with the informant Australian lady searched for him but to no avail. Later they identified the passenger from the CCTV recordings and examined the computerized details of his passport and the boarding card to find that he was a suspect under a travel ban on a court order.

Since the flight had already entered the Indian air space the Immigration and Emigration officers informed the pilot and the Operations Manager in the Mumbai airport about the particular passenger.

He had been arrested at the Mumbai airport and deported to Sri Lanka and handed over to the Immigration and Emigration officers at the Katunayaka International Airport. (T.K.G.Kapila) Daily Mirror
