Extraordinary Gazette Issued Amending Colour-Code Labelling Rules for Sugary Drinks

COLOMBO : Under the amended regulations, beverages containing more than 8.0 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres must carry a red label, those containing between 2.5 and 8.0 grams must display an amber label, while drinks containing less than 2.5 grams of sugar must carry a green label.

An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued introducing amendments to the food colour-code labelling regulations for sugar-containing liquid food products.

The amendments were issued by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa under Section 32 of the Food Act, No. 26 of 1980, and were published in the Extraordinary Gazette dated June 23.

The revised regulations update the design and display requirements of the red, amber, and green colour-coded labels used on packaging of sugary liquid foods.

An alternative labelling option has also been introduced for glass bottles where limited printing space is available.

In addition, a new definition of “business-to-business food products” has been introduced, referring to food items not intended for direct consumer sale or consumption, but used only for further processing, preparation, or resale.
