Enforcement of emergency law will have an adverse effect at UNHRC-Professor Peiris

COLOMBO: The imposition of Emergency Law is absolutely incompatible with the basic policies and the constitution of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, its founding Chairman, MP Prof. G. L. Peiris said on Thursday July 28.

Prof.Peiris said that it may adversely affect Sri Lanka at the Human Rights Commission, which will be held in Geneva next month. It may also lead to the loss of the GSP Plus concession, Peiris noted.
“Parliament debated over the state of emergency, whether to approve it or not. I exercised my vote against the government’s proposal for the adoption and the implementation of the state of emergency. The enforcement of Emergency Regulations in the backdrop of the crisis situation in the country is fundamentally incompatible with the core values, convictions and values of the SLPP. This is one of the main reasons that I had to vote against the emergency regulations.” Prof. Peiris noted. He said the SLPP upholds collective democracy at highest regard.

It is only the Constitution that cannot be touched by the Emergency regulations and all other laws can be swept away by the latter, Prof.Peiris also
