COLOMBO: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared emergency law with effect from midnight on Friday (6), according to an announcement made by the President’s Media Division.
Under emergency regulations, the president can call for the services of the triforces to enforce law and order in the country, There can be restrictions on unlawful gatherings too.
Reacting promptly to declaration of emergency law, Canadian high commissioner in Colombo David McKinnon said : “ Over the past weeks, the demonstrations across #SriLanka have overwhelmingly involved citizens enjoying their right to peaceful freedom of expression, and are a credit to the country’s democracy. It’s hard to understand why it is necessary, then, to declare a state of emergency.”
