Elections Commissioner’s Ruling: Convicted minister will not lose his seat in parliament

COLOMBO: Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said on Tuesday, June7 that Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, who was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and suspended for five years, will retain his Parliamentary even aft the Court verdict.

For an imprisonment term of not more than two years an MP should complete a jail term of at least six months or complete the whole two-year jail term for the abolition of Parliament membership, he said.

He said this is not applicable to Minister Prasanna Ranatunga as it is a suspended prison sentence. He expressed these views when inquired about the election regulations with regard to the Monday’s Court verdict where Minister Ranatunga was convicted of allegedly extorting money from a businessman over a land dispute in 2015.
