COLOMBO
“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
— William Shakespeare
Miss Rashmi Nimesha Gunawardana of Halloluwa, Deraniyagala, is a third-year undergraduate at the Faculty of Management, University of Kelaniya. Born with different abilities, Rashmi is not only an academic achiever but also a musical talent who captured the attention of the nation through Ada Derana Prime Time News @ 6.55. Her remarkable journey places her firmly in the third category described by Shakespeare—greatness thrust upon her, earned through sheer grit and determination.
A Beacon from Eheliyagoda
Rashmi’s story was brought to light by the ever-smiling and empathetic Hasitha Wijewardene, a leading presenter from Ada Derana. He chose to spotlight this shining gem from Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura, proving that disability is never a limitation. Through such heartfelt stories, Ada Derana has built a meaningful bond with its viewers, offering hope and inspiration across the island.
Triumph Over Trials
Born without arms and with only one leg—supported by a prosthetic limb—Rashmi’s resilience is unmatched. Using her left foot for writing, turning pages, and operating devices, she has redefined what’s possible. Her academic journey began at Halloluwa Junior School, Dehiowita, where she was the only student to pass the 2012 Grade 5 Scholarship Exam from her school, scoring an impressive 153 marks. This led her to the Eheliyagoda National School—a pivotal move made possible by her devoted parents, both educators.

Academic Brilliance
Rashmi continued her education in the English medium and faced the GCE O/L exam in 2018 with distinction—8 A’s and 1 B. She joined the Commerce Stream for her A/Ls and scored 3 A’s in Accountancy, Business Studies, and Economics, ranking 156th in the Ratnapura District. Her aspiration: to specialize in Human Resource Management—a goal she’s actively pursuing as a 3rd-year Management undergraduate at Kelaniya University.
Unyielding Determination
In a compelling interview, Hasitha Wijewardene emphasized the rarity of Rashmi’s dedication. While many hesitate to use both hands, Rashmi has mastered the art of writing, typing, and learning—using her left foot. Her secret? Unshakable determination. According to Rashmi, this trait is the very cornerstone of her success.
Talent Beyond Academia
Rashmi is not just a scholar—she’s an inborn musical virtuoso and an enthusiastic social motivator. Her voice captivates audiences, and her energy uplifts those around her. In 2019, she represented Sri Lanka at the Global Technology Challenge in Vietnam and won the Super Challenge Gold Medal, proving her brilliance extends far beyond the classroom.
Challenge the Challenges
