NEGOMBO: Negombo Municipal Council Medical Officer, Dr.Sameera Abeysinghe said here on Firday that the abandoned bus depot in Periyamulla remains a threat to the public health and immediate action be taken promptly to clean the neglected lot.
The health hazard was revealed during a field visit to the site during the launch of the Dengue Awareness Campaign last week.
The visitors to the abandoned site included Public Health Inspectors, Deputy Mayor of Negombo M.A.Z Farees and Health Officer Dr. Sameera Abeysinghe.
Speaking to Colombo Times, Abeysinghe said the old bus depot is centrally located near the school, mosque and residential houses where there is sizable human occupation.” Rain water is stagnated in the damaged buses and they are breeding ground for mosquitoes which can spread dengue to the neighbouring areas.He added that the place is overgrown with grasslands and trees and they pose a severe threat to the public health.
