COLOMBO The Free Palestine Movement of Sri Lanka will gather on Tuesday, May 19 at 3.30pm opposite the Foreign Ministry to urge the Sri Lankan government to ensure the safe release of Sri Lankan activist Sameera Mahboobdeen.
Sameera is the only Sri Lankan taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, was abducted on international waters on May 18 by Israeli forces. She was abducted on international waters against international law conventions and is presumed to be in Israeli custody. The Free Palestine Movement of Sri Lanka urges the government to take action to ensure the safe release of Sammeeira while urging Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka and overseas to share her pre recorded message in the event of capture which has been released on her social media.
The 54 boats of the flotilla, with over 400 activists from 45 countries, sailed from Turkiye carrying aid to Gaza. Israeli forces have intercepted more than 40 boats and seized over 300 activists
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a peaceful fleet of ships attempting to break through the Israel government’s blockade of food, medicine and other aid for the people of Gaza. Previous Flotilla, including one which included prominent activist Greta Thunberg, were unsuccessful – the Israeli army violated international law and intercepted the flotillas – detaining and even killing the activists on board.
