Delta variant seeps into all parts of Sri Lanka

COLOMBO : Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath said on Monday,July 26 that the Delta variant of Coronavirus, first reported in India, has now spread to all districts of the country.

Speaking to the media Dr.Herath urged all vaccine-eligible people to get vaccinated and also to strictly adhere to the health guidelines to prevent further spread of this highly transmissible and rapidly spreading coronavirus mutation.

“ There is no specific test used to trace the individuals infected with the Delta variant of Coronavirus and we just guess the number of patients based on the results of the samples collected from different groups covering all the districts. The health authorities have noticed that between 20-30 percent of new Delta cases are reported from Colombo district,” the official said.

He further said that the initial evidence suggests that COVID vaccines are effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death among patients who contract the Delta variant.
