Delay in releasing 2023 GCE (O/L) re-correction results leaves students in limbo before the 2024 examination

MOHAMED ZAHRAN

COLOMBO : Why are the 2023 GCE (O/L) re-correction results still pending, leaving students in limbo before the 2024 examination?

Several students at a prominent international Muslim girls school located in Thalakotuwa Gardens, Colombo 5, following the local syllabus have raised concerns regarding the delayed release of the re-correction results for the 2023 GCE (O/L) examination. They have requested me to bring this issue to the attention of Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Ms. Harni Amarasuriya, who also oversees the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.

The key concern is that these results are not expected to be released prior to the closing date for applications to sit for the 2024 GCE (O/L) Examination. This delay is particularly concerning because, should a student’s re-correction results be unfavorable, they will miss the opportunity to sit for the 2024 examination and will face a full year’s delay in retaking it.

Below is the timeline for both the 2023 and 2024 GCE (O/L) Examination schedules:

Although the re-correction results were expected to be released by the end of January 2025, they are still pending, and this delay poses a serious issue for candidates. The students have requested to be allowed to apply for the 2024 examination, with the hope of sitting for it if necessary, without facing the consequences of such delays.

It is now up to the Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Ms. Harini Amasuriya and the Department of Examination to evaluate and address this request in a timely and equitable manner.
