COSMOS UK speaks for the protestors in Sri Lanka

LONDON : The Council of Sri Lankan Muslim Organisations (COSMOS UK), an umbrella organization of 27 Sri Lankan Muslim organizations has urged the Government of Sri Lanka to address and resolve the escalating public hardship endured by many in Sri Lanka in the last few months.

In a letter signed by COSMOS General Secretary Sifan Neaeem it is said : “The people of Sri Lanka are united irrespective of their race, religion and ethnicity in the struggle to voice their frustration and demand for their basic needs and rights.

The prolonged power cuts with queuing for many basic needs along with shortage of foreign currency and burden of foreign debts has caused people to show their frustration and displeasure against the politicians in recent weeks by protesting and demonstrating throughout Sri Lanka and other major cities worldwide.

People have the right to express their opinions and views in a democratic and peaceful manner which should be recognised by the authorities. Most importantly solutions should be actioned without any ulterior motives and not only address the immediate issues but also put an end to root causes such as corruption, nepotism, bad governance and mismanagement in a way that meets the aspirations of the people.

Demonstrations resonate the views of our affiliate organisations and their members here in UK and we support joining these peaceful, non-political demonstrations in a democratic peaceful manner in support of their families, friends and their fellow countrymen’s grievances in this holy month of Ramadan without any party politics at this difficult time for all Sri Lankans.

We encouraged our affiliates and members to join hands on Wednesday 13th April 2022 in front of High Commission of Sri Lanka – London on ‘Peaceful Vigil in True Sri Lankan Sprit” showed the light of hope and support of our Sri Lankan brethren.”
