Colombo Zahira G70 Elects Office Bearers at AGM

A. M. M. Muzammil

COLOMBO : Sri Lanka has only a limited number of educational institutions with a legacy spanning more than 130 years. Among them is Zahira College, whose Old Boys’ Association (OBA), established more than a century ago, comprises nearly 50 affiliated groups, all committed to supporting their Alma Mater.

One such group is G70, established nearly two decades ago with the primary objective of fostering fellowship among its members and supporting the educational and developmental endeavours of the school.

Today, G70 is represented by four senior members within the OBA. They include Mr. M. B. M. Mashood, who serves as Internal Auditor; Mr. A. M. M. Muzammil, who has served as Editor for the past 13 years; Mr. M. H. M. Falul; and Mr. Rafeek Buhary. In addition, another G70 member serves on the Board of Governors (BOG).

On Sunday, 27 September 2026, G70 held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Swimming Pool Complex, where members gathered in large numbers for the occasion.

The meeting commenced with the customary recital of Qirath, followed by the College Anthem and a Dua in memory of deceased members. The agenda then proceeded with the reading of the notice and the minutes of the previous meeting, followed by the Annual Report for 2025/2026 and the adoption of the Audited Report, which had been circulated among the members.

This year, too, Mr. Mass Usuf, who has served as Pro Tem Chairman since the inception of G70, conducted the AGM with enthusiasm and commitment.

A special newsletter was also published to highlight the group’s achievements and activities. The first copies were presented by Vice President Mr. A. M. M. Muzammil to Mr. Mass Usuf and the newly elected President, Mr. M. B. M. Mashood.

Mr. Mass Usuf then delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking address, reflecting on the journey of ageing and the quiet dignity, profound wisdom, and enduring grace that accompany it. His eloquent words celebrated the passage of time, reminding everyone that growing older is not a fading of life, but a journey towards deeper wisdom, richer experiences, and the cherished chapters of life.

The newly elected President, Mr. M. B. M. Mashood, a Chartered Accountant by profession, expressed his sincere gratitude to all G70 members for the confidence and trust they had placed in him and for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading G70 towards greater heights.

Mr. Mashood emphasised that when members stand together as one united team, there is no limit to what they can achieve. He reminded members that, by moving forward with renewed enthusiasm, unity, and determination, G70 can continue to uphold its proud tradition while working collectively for the betterment and continued progress of their beloved Alma Mater, Zahira College.

The meeting concluded on a warm and convivial note with a sumptuous meal and an enticing selection of desserts, reflecting the spirit of fellowship and camaraderie that characterises G70.
