Colombo Literary Festival 2026 to Debut as Sri Lanka’s First Trilingual International Literary Festival

NELUM BUDDHADASA

COLOMBO : Preparations are underway for the inaugural Colombo Literary Festival 2026, a landmark event set to redefine Sri Lanka’s literary and cultural landscape. Taking place from July 24 to 29, 2026, at the Independence Arcade, Colombo 7, the festival will be the country’s first-ever trilingual international literary festival, giving equal prominence to Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Running daily from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m., the six-day festival is organised by Colombo Literary Festival (Pvt) Ltd, whose board of directors comprises the owners of five of Sri Lanka’s leading publishing houses.

Bringing together an impressive line-up of acclaimed local and international authors, literary critics, academics, and scholars, the festival is designed to be far more than a traditional book fair. It will serve as a vibrant platform for literary exchange, cultural dialogue, and intellectual engagement, featuring discussions on contemporary literature, its social and political influence, and the future of publishing and storytelling.

The festival programme includes a series of thought-provoking panel discussions led by distinguished Sri Lankan and international speakers, offering audiences the opportunity to engage with diverse literary perspectives and global ideas.

Visitors will also have access to an extensive book exhibition showcasing a wide selection of local and international publications, providing readers with the opportunity to discover and purchase books from leading publishers under one roof.

Adding an international cinematic dimension to the event, an International Film Festival will be held at the Goethe-Institut (German Cultural Centre), Colombo 7, presenting a carefully curated selection of films for cinema enthusiasts.

The festival will also feature specially curated musical evenings, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere that complements the literary programme and offers visitors a rich, immersive experience.

The inaugural Colombo Literary Festival aims to establish itself as a premier annual celebration of literature, ideas, and the arts, fostering dialogue across languages, cultures, and generations while positioning Sri Lanka as an emerging destination for international literary exchange.
