CID grills former President Sirisena for five hours over his statement on Easter attacks

COLOMBO : Former President Maithripala Sirisena who arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday,March (25) at 10.15 am to provide a statement over the Easter Sunday terror attacks, left the premises at 3.45 pm, after CID officers recorded a statement from him lasting for about five and a half hours, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.

DIG Thalduwa said that the statement recorded by the CID was in connection with the controversial statement that former President Sirisena had made on Friday (22) in Kandy, claiming that he knew who the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday terror attacks were,according to Daily News.

However, the next day (23), former President Sirisena said that he made that statement according to information he had received three weeks ago.

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles had instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct an urgent investigation regarding these statements made by former President Sirisena.

Accordingly, former President Sirisena was called to the CID to appear within 48 hours by 10.30 am yesterday (25) to record a statement in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks.

DIG Thalduwa said that the recorded statement of former President Sirisena will be fully investigated by the CID and after the conclusion of the investigations, the CID will forward the findings to the Attorney General and get his legal advice on the matter.

DIG Thalduwa added that according to the advice of the Attorney General, the CID will determine what further course of action needs to be taken regarding the matter.
