COLOMBO : I extend my heartfelt greetings to the Christian community of Sri Lanka on the occasion of Christmas, a noble celebration of humanity observed with great devotion and joy by Christians worldwide. Christmas is not merely a festive celebration but a spiritual journey based on sharing, sacrifice, and respect for humanity. Over two thousand years ago, the birth of Baby Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem took place with the noble purpose of bringing peace and love to the world. His life teaches us the profound importance of showing compassion toward the poor, the helpless, and the oppressed.
Sri Lanka is a nation enriched by diverse religions and cultures. Christmas stands as a unique milestone in our cultural calendar, a period that fosters brotherhood regardless of religious differences. As the Christian community celebrates this noble day, the mutual respect shown by other religious communities joining in those celebrations is a powerful hallmark of our country’s cultural identity.
In today’s complex social environment, the principles of supreme non-violence, patience, and kindness preached by Jesus Christ are of paramount importance.
This Christmas provides us with a great opportunity to build a society free from hatred and anger by helping one another. It is our responsibility to stand firm and be a strength to each other in the face of existing economic and social challenges, as well as natural disasters. Furthermore, guided by the spirit of selflessness preached by Jesus Christ, we must all work together to uplift those affected by recent calamities.
I wish for a blessed Christmas where the message of love and peace flows into every home and every heart. On this noble day, let us all commit ourselves to a better, more peaceful, and developed Sri Lanka.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas filled with peace and happiness!
Muneer Mulaffar (M.P.) Deputy Minister of Religious and Cultural Affairs
