Chief of Saudi Fund For Development opens Wayamba University Township development project in Kuliyapitiya

COLOMBO : Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) Sultan Abdulrahman A Almarshad opened the Wayamba University Township Development Project at the university in Kuliyapitiya on Monday,July 14 in the presence of Saudi ambassador Khalid Humoud Al Kahtani an deputy speaker Dr.Rizwie Salih.

In a statement released on the occasion, Ambassador Al Kahtani said :” I am pleased and honored to have participated on Monday, July 14, 2025, in the opening of the Wayamba University Township development project, which is an educational and developmental achievement that embodies the depth of relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

The Saudi Fund for Development has contributed to financing 15 projects in the Republic of Sri Lanka with a value estimated at more than $425 million. This is one of the projects that has been implemented, and this comes from the Kingdom’s belief in the importance of investing in human beings and supporting the future of education in Sri Lanka.

We believe that building universities is not limited to constructing buildings only, but is the foundation for a brighter future and the building of bridges of understanding and knowledge between peoples.

This project represents a model of what sincere developmental partnerships can achieve, based on respect and mutual cooperation, away from any agendas or conditions.

The Saudi Fund for Development, since its establishment in 1975, has been keen to support sustainable projects in more than 90 countries, based on the Kingdom’s values of serving development and peace around the world.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al- Saud and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and to everyone who contributed to the success of this project, whether from the implementing agencies or from our partners in the Sri Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka.

In conclusion, I hope that Wayamba University will be a beacon of knowledge and a home of hope, and that it will contribute to graduating generations who will help build a prosperous and secure Sri Lanka.”
