COLOMBO : Zahira Veterans successfully conducted the third edition of the most coveted football tournament, “Battle of the Masters 2023” on Sunday, the 12th of February, at the grounds of Zahira College, Colombo.
Eight leading schools of the island – Zahira College Colombo, Zahira College Gampola, St.Peters College, Wesley College, Royal College, De Mazenod College, Nalanda College & St. Benedict College – were participants of this tournament.
What took place was a testament to the old saying, “Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away!” What we witnessed was brilliant – the old “Masters” on their respective teams showcased unique and signature styles, and were agile as leopards. Their grit, resilience, and unflappability are still intact and will never fade away!
Almost all the teams comprised a galaxy of players, who once donned the national jersey and played the game with good spirit. The spectators experienced the full spectrum of emotions and cheered their hearts out in support of their respective teams.
St. Peters became the Plate Champion by defeating De Mazenod College Kandana by 2 – nil.
The semi-finals were a thrilling encounter between Zahira College Colombo and Zahira College Gampola. It was a nail-biting match and adrenaline gushed through fans’ veins as Zahira College Colombo dethroned Gampola Zahira by 1 nil. The match ended in a penalty and Zahira College Colombo emerged as the worthy winner.
