Bank heist foiled in Anuradhapura

ANURADHAPURA: An attempt by two individuals to rob a private security vehicle carrying cash for an ATM of a private bank in Anuradhapura yesterday was thwarted by security officials. This is despite the robbers throwing chillie powder on their faces followed by shooting with a firearm.

A security guard at the Bank sustained injuries in the shooting and was admitted to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Police said two persons on a motorcycle had attempted to rob cash in the Anuradhapura New Town area around 6.40 am yesterday. The incident had taken place while officials were engaged in depositing cash into the ATM machines.

At the time of the incident, cash worth over Rs.12 million was to be loaded to the ATM, sources said. Anuradhapura Police HQI, CI Sanjaya Mahanama told Daily News that investigations were in progress to apprehend the culprits, through eye witness statements and CCTV footage.

The robbers had thrown chilli powder at the security personnel and also had attacked them but the security officials had been able to prevent them from robbing the cash.
