Kiel, Germany (dpa) – A 25-year-old woman gave birth to her baby on a lifeboat off the coast of northern Germany in the early hours of Easter Sunday.
The expectant mother was supposed to be taken from the northern German island of Sylt to Havneby in Denmark on the ship Pidder Lueng of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) and from there to hospital in the German border city of Flensburg by ambulance.
But the little boy, named Bosse, was impatient to enter the world and born at sea at just after 4 am (0200 GMT), the DGzRS reported.
“We are super happy and we are all doing well,” the young mother Lara Mueller-Maron said.
The ambulance from Flensburg waiting at the harbour was no longer needed.
After about an hour, mother and child were able to return to the town of List on Sylt on the Pidder Lueng.
Even though the sea rescuers are generally prepared to deal with medical emergencies, births on board are rare, according to the DGzRS.
The last time this was the case was almost 10 years ago. At that time, a boy was born on the lifeboat of the station on the island of Amrum.
