COLOMBO : Australia is planning to commence direct flights to Sri Lanka from August this year, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath announced at the conclusion of his official visit to Australia and New Zealand.
Speaking at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra, the Minister said the proposed direct air connectivity is expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Minister Herath also revealed that Sri Lanka has made significant diplomatic progress towards securing membership in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the world’s largest free trade agreement.
During the visit, both Australia and New Zealand, key members of the RCEP bloc, expressed their full support for Sri Lanka’s bid to join the organization.
The RCEP comprises 15 countries, including the 10 ASEAN member states and major economies such as Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, and South Korea, and is regarded as the world’s largest free trade agreement in terms of population and economic output.
