COLOMBO Parliamentarian and President’s Counsel Faiszer Musthapha has stated that he is delighted over the decision of the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia to annul the death sentence imposed on Engineer Anojan Sivarasa, a native of Kalmunai who had gone to work in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued by him in this regard, he further said:
“This is a great victory for the legal and diplomatic efforts we have undertaken over the past couple of months to save the life of Anojan Sivarasa. We worked day and night for this, together with our legal team in Saudi Arabia.
My thanks to the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, which considered this matter with humanity and delivered a just verdict, and to His Majesty King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who acted with a compassionate heart.
At the same time, I express my heartfelt thanks to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayake and the Government of Sri Lanka, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who undertook various efforts from Sri Lanka for this.
I also express my special thanks to Attorney-at-Law Upul Kumarapperuma, Additional Solicitor General Asad Nawavi, Justice M.D. Mohomed, the representative of the Sri Lankan Consulate in Jeddah, Attorney-at-Law Faris Fazal Abdul Hafeel Mohamed and my Coordinating Secretary Mohamed Riyasdeen Silmy, who worked with me on this case.
Furthermore, I am obliged to express my thanks at this moment to the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia O.L. Ameer Ajward, the officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh, and to all those who gave full comfort to Anojan’s family.
In terms of ‘being able to save the life of a Sri Lankan’, this gives me immense personal satisfaction,” President’s Counsel Faiszer Musthapha further pointed out in his statement.
