COLOMBO : The All-Ceylon YMMA Conference ,ACYMMA, Disaster Management Unit has embarked on a chain of projects to help the flood victims and their families.
The National President of the ACYMMA, Amhar Sheriff told Colombo Times that its
Disaster Management Unit (DMU) headed by Anver Sadath has been carrying out the relief work through the network of its branches in affected areas.
Explaining the relief work undertaken by the DMU, Sarath said that the DMU has set up a central coordination center at the ACYMMA head quarters in Colombo and has expanded operations across the flood-affected areas to ensure immediate and organized response.
The center has conducted rescue missions in Wellampitiya with the support of NSC and KRC members. Evacuated affected families were relocated them to safe camps. It also provided cooked meals daily for all displaced victims until they were able to return to their homes.
“ Under the Post-Flood Cleanup Initiative – Commenced on the 5th December, we have opened a dedicated support center in Wellampitiya to assist Zahara Garden residents with home cleanup task.”
The center distributed cleaning materials, detergents, and provided pressure water guns for community use (on borrow-and-return system),he said.
“ With sponsorship from the National Shoora Council headed by President’s Counsel, M M Zubair, we printed 10,000 claim forms and assisted senior citizens in completing and submitting them to their respective Grama Sevakas (GS).”
A second support office was opened in Puttalam with implementation handled by the District Director and the Puttalam YMMA branch.
ACYMMA has conducted 15 successful medical camps in collaboration with medical professionals and partner organizations.
“ We offered free healthcare, treatments, and immediate medical attention to flood-affected communities, he added.
With the support of the National Shoora Council, Mercy Malaysia doctors are now in Colombo to further expand medical outreach across affected areas, Sadath noted.
Sadath pointed out that a programme to assist the families returning home is in the pipeline. He also said he has plans to assist the children who will be returning to their respective schools following the disaster.
