A Wildlife Department office to be set up at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota

COLOMBO – The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a dedicated Wildlife Department office at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota.

The decision comes in response to repeated incidents of wild elephants and other animals trespassing onto airport premises and crossing access roads, which have posed threats to infrastructure and disrupted airport operations. The damages caused have also led to significant repair costs for Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt.) Limited.

The newly established office will focus on monitoring and managing wildlife movements, preventing attacks, and ensuring the safety of passengers, airport staff, and airport infrastructure. Authorities expect the move to minimize operational delays and maintain uninterrupted aviation services at the airport.daily mirror
