A Tribute to My Dear Friend – Alhaj Muhammad Rumi Jaleel

AN APPRECIATION – By A.M.M.Muzammil

COLOMBO : Surely, we belong to Allah, and to Him shall we return.

It is with profound sorrow that I pen this tribute to my dear friend and old classmate, Alhaj Muhammad Rumi Jaleel, who departed from this world on the 6th of October, 2025. His passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew him and within the wider Muslim community, where his compassion, humility, and service were a source of inspiration.

Fondly known as Rumi Jaleel, he was an indefatigable social worker whose life was devoted to the betterment of others. For nearly twenty-five years, he served as the person in charge of the Kuppiyawatte Mosque, where he was instrumental in its expansion and development. It was through his vision and perseverance that the Maradana Mosque Management was persuaded to undertake the project, and through his tireless efforts, a generous philanthropist came forward to fund it. Thanks to his dedication and unwavering commitment, the Kuppiyawatte Jumma Mosque was successfully completed within a year.

Another remarkable initiative he pioneered was the establishment of a free funeral parlour for the residents of Kuppiyawatte and its surrounding areas—most of whom lacked the basic facilities for bathing and preparing the deceased for burial. This compassionate act stands as a testament to his deep empathy and devotion to community welfare.

Rumi Jaleel was also a pillar of strength for Zahira College, serving the institution for more than three decades with steadfast dedication and sincerity. He played a pivotal role in numerous initiatives that enhanced Zahira’s progress and reputation. He was a founding member of the G70 Group, an executive member of the Zahira Welfare Committee, and a senior trustee of the Maradana Mosque Board. His service extended far beyond institutional roles—he was a helping hand to anyone in need, always ready to serve with humility and heart.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he rendered invaluable service to the Muslim community, extending support and relief to many at a time of great distress.

Rumi Jaleel lived a truly exemplary life, filled with purpose, service, and faith. It is deeply heartening to see his noble legacy continued by his five sons, who remain actively involved in the affairs of Zahira College—particularly his second son, who now serves as the President of the Zahira College OBA.

May Almighty Allah shower His infinite mercy upon him, forgive his shortcomings, accept all his good deeds, illuminate his grave, and grant him the highest place in Jannathul Firdous.

With apologies to Elton John — “The candle has blown out, but the legend never will.”
