5 suspects apprehended for recent break-in at Indian Visa Application Centre in Colombo

COLOMBO: Police Spokesman, SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that five suspects had been taken into custody over the recent break-in at the Indian Visa Application Centre located on Philip Gunawardena Mawatha in Colombo.

Thalduwa revealed that the suspects had entered the office of the centre’s country manager and stolen several equipment, which necessitated the Indian High Commission in Colombo to announce that the centre was closed from February 15 for a few days until February 20 citing security reasons.

Police recovered a laptop, DVR, camera and an i-Pod worth LKR 300,000 from the suspects’ possession.

However, investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects had broken-in to steal equipment or for another purpose.

Two suspects aged 53-years were arrested in Wellawatta while two others aged 49 and 54 were arrested from the Kirulapona and Thimbirigasyaya areas.

Thalduwa said that a 63-year old apprehended female sanitary worker employed at the centre from the Grand Pass area may have provided the necessary information to the other suspects.

The suspects will be produced in court after preliminary investigations are complete.
