COLOMBO : Consumers are to get sugar at a standard price of Rs130 per kilogramme through the Sathosa and cooperative shops in the country from Wednesday, September 1.
Janaka Wakkumbura Minister of State for Small Plantation Crops told Colombo Times that the government has adequate stocks of 1.750 metric tons of sugar from National Sugar Company and it will also receive another 600 tons from the Gal Oya Sugar Company and the whole stock will be good enough to supply the consumer demand for a period of five months.
At present, the price of sugar has shot upto Rs 240 in the market.The government has seized more than 5,000 metric tons of hoarded sugar from errant traders.
