COLOMBO: A total of 13 stranded Sri Lankan migrant workers from Sudan arrived in Colombo on Wednesday,April 26
On the request made by the Government of Sri Lanka , the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia facilitated the evacuation of 13 Sri Lankan together with Saudis and other nationals.
They arrived in Jeddah and accommodated at a hotel until they are repatriated to Colombo.
“ This is a great and generous gesture towards the humanitarian needs of the stranded Sri Lankans. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the leadership of the Kingdom for acceding to the request made by the Government of Sri Lanka,” Sri Lanka’s foreign minister Ali Sabry told Colombo Times on Wednesdwg evening
The sland’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia P M Amza said that Saudi Arabia was the first country which volunteered to evacuate the stranded people not only among Saudis but also diplomats and workers from several other countries
Including Sri Lanka
According to a.release from colombo foreign ministry ” Sri Lanka continues to monitor the evolving security situation in the Sudan and is closely working with its international partners, including the Government of India and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to evacuate the stranded Sri Lankans.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Cairo and Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul in Khartoum are in regular contact with the relevant parties in Khartoum, including the Sudanese authorities and the Indian Embassy in Khartoum, to secure safe evacuation.
As of this morning (26/4), thirteen (13) Sri Lankans who were evacuated with the assistance of the Saudi Government have been received in Jeddah by Sri Lanka’s Acting Consul General Fazal Farook Twelve (12) more Sri Lankans are in Port Sudan awaiting evacuation.
The Government of Sri Lanka is making every effort to evacuate the remaining Sri Lankans in Khartoum, taking into account the need for safe passage in a volatile security situation.
